A Postcard from Montreux

There are some places that stay with you long after you’ve left, and for me, Montreux is one of them. It’s a destination I find myself returning to time and again, and one I love sending our Trip Me Up clients to. Effortlessly reached by rail, it’s the kind of place that feels like it was made for slow, scenic journeys.
Set on the shores of Lake Geneva, Montreux has a gentle, almost cinematic beauty. Think shimmering water, mountain backdrops, and a promenade that invites you to linger just a little longer than planned. And right at the heart of it all is my go-to stay: Hotel Mona. This hotel is perfectly positioned, it offers those postcard-worthy views the moment you wake up and puts you within easy reach of everything that makes this town so special.

A short stroll along the lake brings you to the fairy-tale silhouette of Chillon Castle, one of Switzerland’s most iconic landmarks. Sitting just off the shoreline, it feels like stepping into another era. In the opposite direction, music lovers will recognise the statue of Freddie Mercury, a tribute to the singer who found inspiration here. Nearby, you’ll also find a small but fascinating Queen museum, which is another unexpected gem.
But Montreux isn’t just about what’s on the ground. One of my favourite experiences is taking the funicular railway up to Rochers-de-Naye. As you climb, the views open up dramatically, revealing the lake and Alps in all their glory. It’s the kind of journey that reminds you why rail travel is so special. It's unhurried, immersive, and endlessly rewarding.
Back at lake level, there are boat trips to enjoy, cafés to settle into, and that ever-present sense of calm that makes Montreux so hard to leave.
If you’re dreaming of a journey stitched together by beautiful rail routes and unforgettable places, Montreux should be your next stop.
